Boycott Johnson and Johnson, Buy CRUELTY FREE PRODUCTS
I’ve comprised a list of products that use antiquated and cruel means of testing on animals. Please DO NOT use the products listed below.
Arm and Hammer, Armor All, Arid, Ban, Banana Boat, BenGay, Bausch and Lomb, Bounty, BristolMeyers, Clarion, Clairol, Neutrogena, Pantene, PineSol, CLOROX, Copertone, Coty, Covergirl, Crest, Colgate, CUTEX, DOW, Finesse, Playtex, Post it, Max Factor, LYSOL, Lubroderm, Listerne, Lava, Kleenex, Jovan, Jhirmack, Huggies, Glade, Sally Hensen, Scotch, Sensodyne, SmithKline, Suave, Yves Saint Laurent, Woolite, Windex, TILEX, Tide, GLADE, Vaseline, Vidal Sassoon, Visine, 3M
The ones in all caps seem especailly cruel (bleech, acetone, etc)
PRODUCTS that DD NOT test on animals: Hooray for these companies!
ABBA, Almay, Aloe Vera, Amway, AquaFresh, Amway, Arbonne, Avalon, Aveda, Avon, Barbizon, Bath and Body Works, Bic, Bobbi Brown, The body Shop, Bonne Bell, Chanel, Christian Dior, Citre Shine, Clarins (not to be confused with Clarion which DOES test on animals), Crabtree and Evelyn, Epilady, Estee Lauder, Clinique, Origins, Eucerin, Freeman, Garnier, Gillette, Jafra, JASON, Jheri Redding, Paul Mitchell, Jolen, Kiss My Face, Lancome, Liz Claiborne, MAC Cosmetics, Mary Kay, Merle Norman, Nexxus, Nivea, Nordstrom, Norelco, Oral B, Origins, Physicians Formula, Prescriptives, Prestige, Queen Helene, Ralph Lauren, Redken, Aussie, Sebastian, St Ives, Tom’s (of Maine), Trader Joe’s, Tropix, Ultima II, Urband Decay, Victoria’s Secret, Yves Rocher
Products in italics are on temporary ban of animal testing. There are mixed views on whether these companies should be supported (based on their previous activities). My opinion is if we support them while they are participating in the moratorium, they might make a permanent ban, considering the boost in sales.
Should you ever wonder, just look on the back of the product to see if there is an anti-cruelty message. Or check with the PETA site, although I do not recommend viewing of that site by children (or those with a weak stomach)
This is the life I’ve chosen (or the life that has chosen me)
Saturday 1/5- discovered an abandoned rottie chained up in a collision yard, called police and had the run around for 45 minutes on the phone. Finally, Oak Park agreed to send an officer out that way and they never showed up. Respones form Ferndale police? “Well, he’s an ‘outside dog’”. !!!!!!!! I fed and watered him and gave him a thermal waterproof sleeping bag for temporary warmth. Dog had kennel cough and infected eye.
Went door to door in neighborhood to see if anyone could answer questions about the dog. No one answered their doors (although I saw they were home)
Sunday 1/6- called around to 4 rottie rescues, none of which could help. Had friend feed dog while I was out of town.
Monday 1/7 Before work, went to see dog. Eye is clearing up (hooray). Sleeping bag is gone (hmmm…) Stopped inspector unit car and inquired about laws regarding animals, told to mind my own business. Fed and watered dog.
If this dog can not be rescued, it is my fault, and the fault of anyone who is aware of the situation and has done nothing. We are the voices for the creatures who have none. To everyone who has told me it is “none of my business”: SHAME ON YOU
Return from Holiday Hiatus
So, the holidays are over and I need a vacation. No, I mean it. josh and I spent two days home out of the 7 we had off. There was so much hustling and bustling that we are absolutley exhausted. I have been yawning my way through the past two days at work.
I believe that it is hard to focus on the warm fuzzy feeling of holiday gathering when there is so much concern about what time we have to be where and in what city so that we can coordinate with x,z and z.
We never even had the chance to meet with our best friends, who celebrated their first Christmas with thier son, Oein. UGH!!!
The solution? We are going to buy an island and move everyone to it. This way, we are all in once place. I’ve worked out the logisitcs. We will start an exporting business, for those who are into the “work thing”. (Jason, David, Casie)
Kristen will be the island dr.
Jeanette and Alycia can run the island school.
And for those of us who are into the animal thing, we can have a kennel with a rescue (me, Les, Mark, Josh).
Perhaps we can even have a bed and breakfast that the elders can run (Janet, Bonni, Bill, Rich)
And for the grandparents? They will rest and drink tea all day. They deserve it!
back in the saddle again
so…after a short hiatus, i am back. i initially thought that keeping a web journal was a brilliant idea, considering i never shut up. i am that girl who people invite to an uncomfortable situation because i talk so much , no one notices any sort of uncomfortableness.
but when it comes to writing it down, i feel empty. hmmmm….perhaps a thanksgiving day haiku is what we need here.
a-hem…
turkey day is near
but i dont eat meat, so there!
more for you, i’m sure
DUAG meeting tonight
I will be sure to post the details tomorrow.
By the way, I started Weight Watchers on Monday
and ran into someone yesterday that I haven’t seen for a few months and she said (I’m not lying) “Wow you look great, have you lost weight?”
HA! And I was thinking about cheating.
I am an Auntie (again!)
My friend Sarah had her baby on Wednesday at 11:11 pm. She delivered in a half hour. I know, right?
Here we are: Oein (O-wen) and Auntie
New line of handbags
I have finally found a partner to do handbags with. Although I can sew, I choose not to b/c I’ve broken every sewing maching I’ve ever had. So, after a meeting tonight, I can see if this is really going to take off.
I guess I was not meant to be in the corporate world. This is why I’ve tried so many other careers. I would ultimately like to open my own studio/gallery space where I can share my love of creation. My attempt in the public schools has left a bitter taste in my mouth. The kids are great, the political bulls**t is too much. These are my goals (because to spell them out seems so solid and tangible)
A. Win the lottery (as soon as I start playing)
B. Should “A” not work out, receive government grant to:
C. Run an open studio/gallery for children/adolescents
D. Offer private classes through the studio
E. Host fundraisers/charity events (in the studio)for young people with disablities
So, I’ll need to finish up my masters, find info on grants and start shopping for space now. In fact, right now.
People are actually reading this?
Thanks to those of you who have actually read this and posted a reply. To my shock and amazement, you are real (and you’re not my mom or husband)!
The pressure is really on, now.
Anyway, I volunteered at “Meet your best friend at the zoo” this weekend and am so happy to share that almost 100 pets went home from the MHS alone! I guess I am not giving up on humanity quite yet.
New exhibit of old stuff
I will be having an art show at Che Cosa in Mt Clemens from October 5-November 4. It will be a compilation of three previous series (what’s left of them). The series names are: One Woman Army, The World Does Not Revolve (Around You), and Dream vs Nightmare
These series explore a personal strife and a search for what is just and right in the world. Seeking purpose after a shattering blow to my ego, I purged so much hatred and confusion onto the canvases in this collection, it is good to see them filtering out of my inventory. I have now begun a new series contemplating physical illness and its relationship to emotional suffering. In writing all of this down, it seems as though my art would be gloomy and dark…maybe even angry. But, not so! My art is colorful and full of movement. hmmmm…..
The musical adventures of…me!
Okay, so I’ve been on a quest to find some really rockin’ music. I, like many others, have become comfortable with what I like and think that everything current is crap. What happend to the days of The Cure, Depeche Mode, Morrisey…or some good ol’ rock and roll? Or how about some hair band ballads? Just kidding about that last one…maybe.
So, I’ve taken on a new sort of adventure- finding some the kick a** cover songs. Here are my top 5 (beyond the obvious like Clapton’s version of Cocaine)
1. D. Parton’s “Jolene” by White Stripes
2. G. Micheal’s “Faith” by Limp Bizkit
3. Leadbelly’s “Where did you sleep last night” by Nirvana
4. TLC’s “Creep” by Afghan Whigs
5. J. Cash’s “Hurt” by 9 Inch Nails
More to come…
I am a Detroit artist and educator who enjoys all forms of art, including theater, music and visual arts. Beyond art, I love animals, good conversation and Ani DiFranco (not necessarily in that order). I am president of The Detroit Upcoming Artists Guild and am always looking for new members to join us. Yeah!
